About The Event
Based on Vijayan Detha’s story ‘Thakur Ka Roothna’, this play embodies the rich and ancient Indian folk theatrical form, swang, in which folk tales are presented through song and dance, while weaving in social satire. Swang: Jas ki Tas is a critical commentary as well as a humorous, musical performance. The story revolves around a thakur (landlord) who frequently gets upset and makes irrational decisions, whose brunt is borne by the villagers. One time, the thakur commands that all the wells in the village be filled with sand, causing great distress. When the villagers approach ‘Badi-Maaji’ to complain about the thakur, what follows is both funny and sends out a strong social message.
