The Death Penalty
Hindi - English Drama | 75 Minutes | 18+
Graphic language. Mature Themes. Entry strictly for 18+
Justice is simple until it becomes personal.
Across two seemingly unrelated stories, lives are forever altered by acts of unspeakable sexual violence. A pair of daily wage labourers. An influential business family. A looming police investigation. An impending courtroom battle. Different people. Different circumstances. The same uncomfortable questions. As fear, guilt, love, revenge, and self-preservation collide, every certainty begins to unravel.
The Death Penalty is a gripping psychological thriller that constantly shifts beneath the audience's feet. Structured as a compelling play within a play, it evolves far beyond the story of a crime, becoming a searing examination of justice, morality, power, and the choices ordinary people make when the unthinkable enters their lives. Refusing simplistic answers or convenient villains, it leaves audiences questioning not just the law, but themselves.
The play has been written by Mrinal Mathur, one of India's most prolific contemporary playwrights, whose acclaimed oeuvre of original plays has travelled across India and overseas, inviting audiences to question history, challenge assumptions and discover their own truths.
Directed by the acclaimed Rajesh Tiwari of TRUST Theatre, known for his actor-centric, socially engaged productions, the play is presented in a stark, minimalist and intensely physical theatrical style. Sparse staging, powerful performances and haunting visual metaphors create an atmosphere of relentless tension. Using devices with origins in classical Greek Tragedy, his design and direction continually shift the audience's attention away from the violence itself and towards the responses it provokes. Uncompromising yet deeply humane, the play culminates in a breathtaking finale where the boundary between theatre and reality begins to dissolve.
Dark, macabre, provocative, and impossible to forget, The Death Penalty is not theatre that tells you what to think. It is theatre that refuses to let you stop thinking.
