The Third Eye
Written by Jyotiba Phule as 'Trutya Ratna'
Translated into English by Rohini Mokashi-Punekar
The Third Eye, translated by Rohini Mokashi-Punekar is a dramatic reading of Jyotiba Phule's radical 1855 play 'Trutya Ratna', one of his earliest literary interventions on caste, gender and education and one of the earliest dramatic texts published in India. The reading returns to Phule's belief that education opens a "third eye" of self-awareness, dignity and liberation. Unfortunately, it took almost 150 years to reach an audience outside of its original Marathi readership.
The duration of the reading is 60 minutes, followed by a discussion about the play.
