About The Event
Phayul focuses on one of the most significant and painful periods in Tibetan history: the loss of Tibet's independence and the resistance movements that followed in the 1950s. The play depicts the courage and suffering of ordinary Tibetans— monks, families, nomads, and revolutionaries—faced with the violent occupation of their homeland. Beyond simply recounting historical events, Phayul draws striking parallels between the tragedy of Tibet and the modern crises of war, displacement, and loss of identity that the world is currently experiencing. It seeks to remind international audiences that the story of Tibet is not only Tibetan, but a human story shared by all peoples who have suffered oppression. The play is based on extensive research conducted by the author and renowned Indian playwright Abhishek Majumdar in Tibet, in collaboration with the Tibetan community in exile. Tibet Theatre director Lhakpa Tsering, German director Harry Fuhrmann, and author Abhishek Majumdar are staging the world premiere of Phayul with Tibetan actors in October 2026.
