She gained recognition in 2012 for her role of Olivia Pope in the ABC drama Scandal, Washington has received several nominations for her role at the Golden Globe Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. She made her screen debut in 1994 with the ABC telefilm Magical Make-Over and has since then appeared in movies such as Ray (2004), The Last King of Scotland (2006), and Django Unchained (2012).
In 2016, she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie for her role as Anita Hill in the HBO telefilm Confirmation. The following year she voiced the character of Natalie Certain in Pixar’s animated movie Cars 3 (2017).
