Best known for his art-house films, American film director, producer and screenwriter Paul Thomas Anderson made his directorial debut with the 1996 movie, Hard Eight. The movie was based on his own short film from 1993, Cigarettes and Coffee. Anderson followed it up with Boogie Nights in 1997, which chronicled a young man's rise and fall in the Californian porn industry of the late 1970s and early 1980s, often called the Golden Age of Pornography. The movie was nominated for three Oscars and was a commercial hit. Incidentally, Boogie Nights was based on Anderson's first short film, The Dirk Diggler Story (1988). In 1999 Anderson, with his newfound creative control at New Line Cinema's, directed Magnolia. The movie spanning more than three hours, with an ensemble cast, followed several unconnected individuals and their stories of love, forgiveness, and hope. It was nominated for three Oscars at the 72nd Academy Awards.

In 2002 Anderson directed comedian Adam Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love. The movie, his first romantic comedy-drama, was critically acclaimed and earned a Golden Globe nomination. Anderson also won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His next movie, There Will Be Blood, proclaimed by several critics as the "Best Film of the 21st Century So Far", released in 2007. The movie based on the Upton Sinclair novel, "Oil!" was a box-office hit. At the 80th Academy Awards, There Will Be Blood was nominated for eight Oscars. But it ended up winning only the Best Actor Award for Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal of the ruthless, Daniel Plainview. In 2012 Anderson directed The Master, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams in the lead role. It was nominated for three Oscars at the 85th Academy Awards. Anderson next adapted Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel Inherent Vice into a movie of the same name. The movie with Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson in the lead was nominated for two Oscars at the 87th Academy Awards. In 2017 Anderson re-teamed with Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread, which is set in the 1950's London fashion industry. The movie which released worldwide on Christmas Day 2017, will see an Indian release in 2018. It has been nominated for six Oscars at the 90th Academy Awards.

Apart from movies, Anderson has also directed several music videos for musicians and bands like Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Radiohead, HAIM, Joanna Newsom and Michael Penn.
