About
Tarun Majumdar is a veteran Bengali film director who is noted for making several National Award winning films like Nimantran (1972), Kancher Swargo (1964), and Aranya Aamar (1984). He along with the famed quartet, Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak, is rated as one of the finest directors in the Bengali film industry. One of the things that separated him from the directors of his era was that his films showcased the rich Bengali culture and traditions and most of his were works were recreations of the classic novels of literary stalwarts like Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, and Bimal Kar. For his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, the director was conferred with the coveted Padma Shri in 1990.

Early Life
Tarun was born in year 1931 in Bogra, Bangladesh. He completed his education from the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta.

Personal Life
The director married the popular yesteryear Bengali actress Sandhya Roy in 1967.

Movie Career
Tarun Majumdar directed many of his early films under the name Yatrik, which was a screen name for the trio of directors` inlcuding Sachin Mukherji, Dilip Mukherji and him. The trio made well-known films like Chaowa Paowa (1959) starring Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar in the lead role. The other two films he made under the name Yatrik were Palatak and Kancher Swarga both of which released in 1963.

After gaining much success as Yatrik, in 1965 Tarun Majumdar went on to director films on his own and in Ektuku Basha starring Soumitra Chatterjee, which released in 1965 was his first film as an independent director. In the same year, he director Alor Pipasha starring Basanta Choudhury. Two years later, Tarun directed Balika Badhu, which marked the debut of Moushami Chatterjee went onto become one of the biggest hits of his career. Following the success of the film, the director later remade the film in Hindi with the same title. The film, which released in 1976 featured Sachin, Rajni Sharma, Asrani and A.K Hangal but unlike the Bengali version, the film got only a lukewarm reception at the box office.

The director was always believed in giving an opportunity to young talents introduced Debashree Roy and Tapan Paul in his 1980 film, Dadar Kirti, which turned to be a commercial hit. His other box office hits are Shriman Prithviraj (1973), Ganadevata (1978), Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (1985), Poroshmoni (1988) and Apon Amar Apon (1990).

During the mid-90`s Tarun took a break of nearly a decade from films before making his comeback with Alo, which released in November 2003. In 2005, the director cast Maushami Chatterjee, the daughter of the popular actress Maushami Chatterjee and Uttam Kumar`s grandson in his 2005 film Bhalobashar Anek Naam. The film was only a moderate hit. His other popular films include Chander Bari (2007) starring Ritparna Sengupta in the lead role. The film received critical acclaim as well as emerged to be a box office success. Tarun Majumdar`s 2017 project includes Bhalobasar Baari with Rituparna Sengupta in the lead role.
