The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Stephen King is the master of horror but this piece of his writing takes a new spin on his unique storytelling style. With Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the lead, the film does a great job of telling a tale of redemption with two fellow inmates who find solace in each other.
Based on Henri Charriere’s memoir, follows two prisoners who befriend one another inside a cruel French prison. The classic film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman in the leads is an intense and thrilling watch. The successful film even inspired a 2017 remake.
Escape from Alcatraz
This prison escape film followed the attempt of a legendary trio were believed to have successfully escaped from the supposedly inescapable Alcatraz Island prison in 1962. Starring Clint Eastwood as the ringleader, the film was a captivating watch with a perfectly ambiguous ending.
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Based off of Homer’s The Odyssey, this Coen Brothers film is set in Depression era Mississippi and follows three convicts played by George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson. The trio set out on a hilarious and entertaining journey as they escape from a chain gang and set out to retrieve a supposed treasure.
