About The Event

International Bellydance Gala Shows

The Grand Egyptian Dance Theatre

Experience the beauty, diversity, and theatricality of Egyptian dance at the International Bellydance Gala Shows – The Grand Egyptian Dance Theatre, presented as part of the 9th edition of Hip-Nosis Dance of Desert, Mumbai.

Bringing together international artists, leading Indian practitioners, dance academies, and students from across the country, these Gala Shows are a vibrant celebration of the art form in all its richness.

From the elegance of Egyptian Oriental dance to the energy and cultural character of Egyptian folklore, the production journeys through diverse forms including Raqs Sharqi, Mejanse, Golden Era Oriental Dance, Saidi, Fellahi, Bedouin, Nubian, Muwashahat, Melaya Leff, Bambouteya, drum solos, veil work, and other oriental dance expressions.

A Stage for the Community At its heart, this is a community-driven celebration of dance. The majority of performers taking the stage are students and emerging dancers of Egyptian dance from across India, people who have spent months and years training, learning, practising, and growing in this art form.

The Gala provides them with an opportunity to step out of the classroom and onto a professional stage, showcase their talent, celebrate their progress, and share their love for the dance with a live audience. Alongside them will be performances by established Indian artists and international guest artists, creating an exciting coming together of dancers at different stages of their journeys.

Beyond the Social Media Image of Bellydance

In an age where social media has increasingly reduced bellydance to isolated movements, aesthetics, and sensationalised interpretations, the true identity and cultural context of the art can often get lost.

The art form is also frequently viewed through the lens of Bollywood-inspired interpretations, which, while popularising certain visual elements, do not necessarily represent the authentic traditions, musicality, cultural context, and diverse regional forms of Egyptian dance.

Our mission is to spread a deeper and more authentic understanding of this beautiful art form, to introduce audiences to the dance beyond the stereotypes, and to celebrate the music, movement, history, and cultural traditions that have shaped it. This production is our humble attempt to present Egyptian dance with respect for its roots while celebrating the way it has evolved and travelled across the world.

A Celebration That Connects India to Egypt

The Gala also reflects the international journey of Egyptian dance. Our international guest artists, David Abraham and Julia Farid, have dedicated significant parts of their professional journeys to studying and practising Egyptian dance, and have extensively trained within the international Egyptian dance community.

Their presence alongside Indian artists, teachers, academies, and students creates a unique meeting point between Egyptian dance traditions, international practitioners, and India's growing community of dancers. The result is not simply a dance show, but a celebration of a community united by a shared passion for an art form whose cultural roots lie in Egypt.

Two Nights. One Community. A Celebration of Egyptian Dance.
