KASHIKA
A Weekly Celebration of the Performing Arts of Banaras
Kashika is a weekly live programme that brings the theatre, dance and music of Banaras to one stage. It runs every Sunday evening at the Alfred Auditorium, Town Hall, Varanasi, and each edition is about two hours of live performance in two parts.
Part One : Ram Ki Shakti Pooja
A dance-drama based on Suryakant Tripathi Nirala's celebrated poem, directed by Vyomesh Shukla and performed by the Roopvani ensemble. Its visual language comes from the Ramlila of Banaras and its music from the Banaras Gharana. The production has been staged at leading venues in India and abroad. It brings poetry, theatre, dance, music and ritual together in a single stage experience.
Part Two : The Surprise Performance
The second half of every evening belongs to an eminent artist of Banaras, whose name is revealed only on the day. Each week brings a different voice from the city's classical, devotional and folk traditions.
