Discover the fascinating world of rain sticks traditional musical instruments associated with Indigenous cultures of South America, particularly Chile. Traditionally made from hollow cactus stems and filled with small pebbles or seeds, rain sticks create a sound that resembles falling rain when turned.
In this hands-on STEAM experience, children will explore the cultural story and science behind the instrument before making and decorating their own rain stick. They will discover how the materials and movement inside the tube work together to create its unique sound.
SESSION FLOW:
1. Discover Learn about rain sticks, their South American origins and how they were traditionally made and used.
2. Explore Investigate the science of sound and discover what happens inside a rain stick when it is turned.
3. Make Build your own rain stick using simple materials and experiment with different fillings to create different sounds.
4. Create Decorate and personalize your instrument before putting it to the test!
