About The Event

Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam – A Feast of Carnatic Music!

In its endeavour to present the rich hues of Indian performing arts, Banyan Tree has launched several thematic festivals over its journey of more than 30 glorious years. Dakshinayan, the festival dedicated to Carnatic music (South Indian classical music), was one of the most sought-after events, presented for 17 years across northern India (Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune).

Inspired by the famous Chennai Music Season, four years ago Banyan Tree enhanced the Dakshinayan experience by creating the aptly titled Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam, presented in the pious Margazhi month. During this month, the Earth is closest to the sun, resulting in the maximum pull of the sun's gravity. This is the effect the Margazhi month has on the human system, it pulls you from the base. It is a time to bring balance and stability to the system, and one of the ways to achieve this is through the practice of Indian classical music. Considered highly significant for spiritual sadhna, the month is also home to several festivals, and lends itself naturally to Carnatic music concerts, since most compositions in this genre are deeply devotional.

Over the past four years, Banyan Tree's Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam has presented the best of stalwarts, maestros in the making, as well as some brilliant young artists, complementing the experience with a feast of South Indian food throughout the day, courtesy one of the city's most popular caterers. The festival has received an overwhelming response year after year.

The idea behind this festival is simple: all lovers of Carnatic music who cannot be in Chennai for the famous Margazhi season can now enjoy a feast of Carnatic music right here in Mumbai, with their very own Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam. The festival has undoubtedly become one of the most awaited and talked-about events in the city.

So, Mumbai will once again experience a feast for the senses, brilliant music for the ears, authentic South Indian food for the taste buds, and the most beautiful Kanjeevaram sarees for the eyes, with this 2-day Carnatic music festival.
