Guided by Kathak exponent and choreographer Mukti Shri, this vibrant journey draws rhythm, movement, and live music into a mesmerising classical exchange.
Rhythm is both anchor and impulse in ‘Pulse’, a Kathak performance that listens as much as it moves. Conceived by Kathak exponent Mukti Shri, the work explores the intimate bond between Indian classical dance and live music, allowing tradition to unfold through a contemporary lens.
Drawing from Kathak’s core vocabulary, intricate footwork, poised stillness, and expressive nuance, the performance is set against a vibrant musical backdrop of bells, flute, sitar, tabla, bass, and cajón. Here, music is not mere ornamentation but an equal partner, shaping tempo, mood, and narrative. This interplay reflects Mukti Shri’s own journey, shaped by rigorous training under esteemed gurus and years of collaboration across India, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
Rooted in classical discipline yet open to innovation, ‘Pulse’ features a stellar ensemble—Aashay Kulkarni on tabla, Omkar Dalvi on pakhawaj, Ameya Bichhu on harmonium, Dhaval Joshi on flute, with padhant by Aayushi Dixit and Anvi Shri—contributing to a shared rhythmic dialogue. The result is a performance that honours Kathak’s purity while gently expanding its expressive boundaries.
A meditation on time, devotion, and musicality, ‘Pulse’ offers audiences a deeply immersive encounter with a classical form reimagined through a contemporary lens.
