About The Event
Some music is meant to be heard across a hall. This is meant to be heard across a courtyard.
NeeRav Arts Village presents an evening of Hindustani classical music with Shivani Kallianpur, vocalist and Thumri exponent, on an open-air stage, under the sky, on a farm an hour outside the city.
The evening moves through Khayal, the elaborate improvisational form at the heart of Hindustani classical music, into Thumri and Dadra, the shorter and more intimate forms built on longing, devotion and the poetry of Braj.
Shivani is a senior disciple of Padma Shri Vidushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, with a Master's degree in Hindustani Classical Music and an 'A' Grade from Doordarshan. She trained in the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana under Smt. Shalmali Joshi, and learns Thumri and Dadra from Smt. Shubha Joshi in the lineage of the legendary Vidushi Shobha Gurtu. She has performed at the Thumri Utsav in Varanasi, the Puraskar Baithak in New Delhi, and for the Kanara Saraswat Association and Canara Union in Bengaluru, and has released an album of Thumris, Bairan Ratiya.
NeeRav Arts Village is an arts and cultural space near Bidadi: a farm, a lake, a stretch of forest, and a stage built for exactly this. The grounds are quiet, the kitchen is satvik, and the campus is alcohol-free. Come early and walk the property before the music begins.
