About The Event
Shurpanakhi is a contemporary retelling of a forgotten woman from the Ramayana. Through Odissi, Yakshagana and theatre, the production moves beyond the familiar image of Shurpanakhi as a demoness and explores her as a woman with desire, dignity, anger, vulnerability and agency. The play questions who gets to define a woman as good or evil and invites us to look at the Ramayana through the eyes of the woman who is often reduced to a single episode in the epic. Shurpanakhi is not merely a story about rejection. It is a story about a woman who refused to disappear.
