About The Event
Through the expressive language of Kathak, Avenav Mukherjee and Ananya Govitrikar explore the meeting of the Sun and Moon, where contrasting energies find harmony without losing their individuality.
In ‘Somaditya – A Tale of Two Lights’, the Sun (Aditya) and the Moon (Soma) emerge as two distinct presences, each with its own identity and energy. Through Kathak, Avenav Mukherjee and Ananya Govitrikar explore the interplay between these celestial forces, from their differences and attraction to the equilibrium they discover together.
The Sun embodies the dynamism of Tandava; Lasya radiating strength and action, while the Moon reflects the fluidity of Lasya, with its grace and intuition. One burns while the other soothes; one reaches outward while the other turns inward. Their relationship unfolds not through sameness, but through an understanding of what each brings to the other.
Drawing on Kathak’s expressive vocabulary of abhinaya, taal, laya, intricate footwork, spins and gestures, the production gives movement to this evolving relationship. As the two respond to one another, their contrasting qualities find a shared rhythm, revealing how harmony can emerge without erasing difference.
A disciple of Guru Smt Geetanjali Lal, Avenav Mukherjee is a Kathak artist, choreographer and performer whose practice spans classical dance, theatre and contemporary productions. Ananya Govitrikar, trained under Guru Pandita Shama Bhate and Guru Smt Mukta Joshi, is a Kathak dancer, choreographer and educator known for her command of laya and taal nuanced padhant and musical sensitivity.
