About The Event
Tanjaleela is an initiative to bring the rich heritage of Indian classical dance to audiences in the western suburbs of Mumbai. It is an endeavor to take our ancient and cherished art forms to a wider audience, nurture appreciation for their beauty and depth, and contribute towards their continued popularity and preservation.
Tanjaleela provides a platform for young and emerging professional classical dancers who are deeply committed to pursuing their chosen dance forms as a career. These artistes are the future custodians of our rich cultural heritage, and it is through their dedication and sadhana that this legacy will be carried forward to future generations.
At Tanjaleela, dancers representing different Indian classical dance traditions come together to showcase their distinctive styles, with their individual intricacies, aesthetics and unique beauty. The audience gets an opportunity to experience the remarkable diversity of India`s cultural heritage and appreciate the many artistic expressions that have evolved across different regions of our country.
This year, Tanjaleela presents four Indian classical dance traditions:
Mohiniyattam from Kerala by Avani Santhosh
Bharata Natyam from Tamil Nadu by Shaayaree Patil
Sattriya from Assam by Rangrupa Bora
Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh by Shivani Avadhani
Tanjaleela is presented by Guru Ajita Patil, a Bharata Natyam dancer and Guru whose sadhana of this divine art form spans over four decades. Her greatest joy lies in teaching, nurturing and inspiring the next generation of dancers, at her gurukul, Tanjavur Nritya Shala, Kandivali. She enables them to carry forward the rich cultural legacy that she herself received from her Guru Tejaswini Lele and lineage of Gurus from Tanjavur, Late Acharya Parvathi Kumar, Pandit Venugopal Pillai and Guru Jayashree Pillai.
Tanjaleela is an invitation to experience the many hues of India`s classical dance heritage, diverse in expression, distinctive in tradition, yet united by the timeless spirit of Indian art.
NOTE: We are also having our annual Dussehra performance at the same venue from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM, just before Tanjaleela. All the Shishyas of Tanjavur Nritya Shala, Kandivali will be presenting Bharata Natyam, showing the progression from young dancers at early stages of their training to professional dancers.
