About The Event

Every chakkar is angular momentum. Every held balance is a centre of gravity. Classical dance has always been physics, performed.

Over two days at NeeRav Arts Village, Kathak artist Nikita Singh teaches the form through the mechanics underneath it. No physics background is needed, and no dance background is assumed beyond a willingness to move.

The curriculum runs across three modules:

1. The Geometry of Grace. Motion, angles and architecture. How straight lines, triangles and concentric circles form the foundation of classical geometry, and how momentum powers the fast spin of the chakkar.

2. Rooted Motion. Balance, gravity and grounding. A deep dive into tatkar footwork and weight distribution, and how bending the knees lowers the centre of gravity to create effortless stability and explosive speed.

3. Fluidity and Force. Navigating the spectrum of movement. Contrast and transition, moving between sharp geometric strikes (angshuddhi) and liquid, continuous streams of motion (lasya).

Nikita trained under Guru Samiksha Sharma Arun of Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, and studies the Jaipur gharana under Guru Rajendra Gangani. She holds an M.A. in Kathak and has taught masterclasses across Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, from the School of Dance in Tashkent to the Turon Culture Centre in Kokand.

NeeRav Arts Village is an arts and cultural space near Bidadi: a farm, a lake, a stretch of forest, and a shaala built for teaching. The grounds are quiet, the kitchen is satvik, and the campus is alcohol-free.
