The film explores the origins of Hannibal Lecter's rage, fury, terror and savagery. It starts at the desperate end of World War II when it had become a conflict of individual survival. Young Hannibal watches from only steps away as his parents die violently, leaving his younger sister in his care. Alone and with no means of support, Hannibal is forced to live in a Soviet Orphanage that was once his family's home. He flees to Paris, where he found that his uncle was dead, but his beautiful Japanese widow welcomes him. He is plagued with sorrows and nightmares which even her love and kindness cannot soothe. He manages to get into medical school, which serves to hone his skills and provide the tools to exact justice on the war criminals. This serial killer was made, not born.
