A small-time thief, Kathiresan, who is on the run bumps into his doppelganger, Jeevanandham, a philanthropist who fights for villagers' rights against a conniving businessman. In a twisted turn of events, Kathiresan finds himself in Jeevanandham's shoes and take the fight for the villagers' on his shoulders.

Given all the recent hullabaloo and political drama in Tamil Nadu, Kaththi has managed to sail through it and hit the theaters this diwali. The story has an age-old formulaic pattern adapted from MGR period, where look-alikes swap places to solve problems. Thus in Kaththi, ARM has provided Vijay with a contemporary issue. But does the hype and reputable combo of Vijay and Murugadoss live up to such expectations? The movie opens up interestingly with a chase scene where Kathiresan aka Kaththi (Vijay), a smalltime thief escaping from Kolkatta prison at the wee hours and cops run after him. A freeze shot reveals that Kaththi is actually aiding the police to hunt-down a convict who had fled. However, Kaththi manages to escape and reaches Chennai and decides to leave the country with the help of his friend Ravi (Satish), also a thief. He changes his plans after meeting Ankita (Samantha) at the airport and it was love at first sight for him. The same night he witnesses a shootout on the road and was shocked to see the victim Jeevanandham(also Vijay) who looks identical to him. Kaththi decides to impersonate Jeeva which leads to the latter landing up at jail. Amidst much controversy, allegations and political drama, Vijays Kaththi made it to the theatres, as scheduled, this Diwali. Much to the relief of his fans, all matters were resolved in time and within minutes tickets were sold out in several theatres across Chennai.A R Murugadoss and Vijay have proved that they can be a powerful combination. Kaththi opens with Kathiresan aka Kaththi being chased by prison guards and it is later revealed that he is in fact helping the cops track down an escaped convict. But Kaththi manages to give the slip to the police and comes to Chennai with the intention of flying to Bangkok with the help of his friend. However, he drops the plan after he meets Ankita, who dupes him into believing that she wants to marry him, at the airport. Meanwhile, he chances upon a shootout and is stunned upon finding that the victim looks like him. He decides to impersonate the injured man and implicates him as the escaped convict.
