Cris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) is a Las Vegas magician who possesses the unique ability to witness the events of the immediate future moments before they happen. As a child Cris was subjected to a series of cruel experiments by government scientists and doctors, but a change of name and a new identity allowed him to elude detection and start a new life. He now earns his living as a low-rent magician while earning a little extra cash at the blackjack tables. Until this day, Cris has never used his powers to do anything substantial, but when he experiences a vision of Los Angeles being incinerated in a nuclear holocaust, he realizes that he could save a million lives. Now, Cris is in a dilemma. Even after lying low for years he hasn't completely escaped detection from his former captors and the FBI counter terror agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) sets out in search of Cris in order to convince him to use his exceptional powers to prevent the nuclear holocaust from becoming a terrifying reality. He is now forced to choose between saving himself and saving others.
