Verdict: One of the most thrilling gangster movies Malayalam cinema has ever seen. Ranam- Detroit Crossing starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Rahman and Isha Talwar in the lead roles is a crime drama completely set up in Detroit, USA. Nirmal Sahadev, the scriptwriter of Hey Jude debuts as a director with this film and it is produced by Anand Payyanur, Rani, and Lawson Biju under the banner Yes Cinem... ...Read full review
Ranam is a lovable chaos. The protagonist Aadhi is aptly portrayed by Prithviraj. His urban looks and accent give more power to the character. The actor has matured when compared to his gangster role in Lijo Jose Pellisserys City of God, released in 2011. Rahman is a strong villain who makes Aadhi look even more convincing. Nandu as a helpless dad, Isha Talwar as a confused mother of a hopeless teenager, Ashwin as the trustworthy right hand of his brother, Shyamaprasad as Chandran and the cop who has set out to make Detroit crime-free - all of them have done their bit to make the movie an engaging crime thriller. ...Read full review
Ranam will test your patience a bit, because the storytelling has relied more on the voiceover (or dialogues) than actions to explain certain crucial elements. It unfolds at a very slow pace and some philosophical thoughts are repetitive too. The makers could have tweaked the narration a bit to avoid monotony. Prithviraj shines as Aadhi, who has a haunting past. He wants to get rid of it but is unable to do so due to emotional entanglements. Equally good is Rahman as Damodar, a Tamilian who is a drug dealer at Detroit. ...Read full review
Ranam: Detroit Crossing directed by debutant Nirmal Sahadev was one such experience where the characters and their lonely helpless side stayed with me. I wasnt really hoping for an action film and for that reason, the emotional side of the story worked for me in a big way. ...Read full review
First thing to remember before watching Ranam is the fact that it is not a usual mass movie with loads of action elements. Ranam is a film in the lines of a crime drama that grows on you as the narrative progresses. Definitely, Ranam does stay loyal to its genre and has those much-required specialties to offer for the audiences, especially in terms of making and performances. ...Read full review
The performances are the flesh and blood of Ranam. Prithviraj and Rahman stand out throughout the film with their seasoned acting. Nandhu and Ashwin Kumar, as always, effortlessly deliver on screen and that adds Ranam to the list of films in which they have done their parts neatly. Shyamaprasad, Isha Talwar and Giju John deserve a special mention for their natural acting. Newcomers Mathew Arun and Celine Joseph also chip in with a convincing show. ...Read full review
