I wouldn`t call myself a Formula One enthusiast, yet I thoroughly enjoyed Ron Howards Rush, a compelling drama based on the real-life rivalry between racing legends James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Both men, poles apart in personality, famously set their sights on the same goal winning the 1976 world championship. In the flashier of the two parts, Chris Hemsworth (of Thor) stars as swaggering British playboy Hunt, who`s cocky and undisciplined both on and off the track. But it`s Daniel Bruhl (of Inglourious Basterds) who leaves a lasting impression as the brusque Austrian racer Lauda, obsessive in his pursuit of victory, yet relentlessly methodical. Tracing their rivalry from the moment they first competed against each other to the climax of their collision in the 1976 championship, the film works best when the rubber hits the road. The racing scenes are thrillingly shot, giving you the feeling of being strapped in that Ferrari yourself, speeding and zipping around the track as the engines roar. ...Read full review
It`s easy to glamourise a film based on Formula One racing, given the nature of the sport - extreme speed, adrenaline rush, roaring engines, champagne, hot Pit girls, playboy racers and sexy F1 cars. On the other hand, it`s also convenient to deglamourise a `sports biopic` by giving it a documentary treatment. Ron Howard doesn`t succumb to either. His splendid execution strikes the right balance to give us a film that is visually stunning, moving, nail-bitingly intense and heroically entertaining, just like a Formula One Grand Prix. ...Read full review
A Formula 1 driver is in the pit lane during a race, dark rain pounds the circuit, and visibility is almost zero. The driver loses track position as the cars that didn`t pit zoom past. He needs to win the race to win the championship, and it would be suicidal to attempt overtaking. The driver says, `Fuck it` as his car storms out of the pit lane and overtakes 10 cars in one go. `Rush` is a wet dream for Formula 1 fans, and one of the most thrilling and entertaining auto racing based movies ever made. ...Read full review
