Born in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, she began modelling at the age of 15, appearing in a Sunsilk advertising campaign in the mid-1970s, before later working in print and television advertising and going on to appear in films. She also had a fashion venture focused on bridal trousseaus and couture garments, and was a Page 3 regular for her fashion and styling during the 1980s and 1990s. Aarti Gupta Surendranath (nee Gupta) is the daughter of Major Gyanchandra Gupta, who served in the Indian Army's 3rd Guards Battalion and was an aide-de-camp to the President of India from 1962 to 1967. She attended St. Joseph's Convent of Jesus and Mary in Colaba, Bombay, during one of her father's postings, where she participated in dramatics and began modelling at 15.
Gupta Surendranath began her modelling career while still at school, appearing in a Sunsilk shampoo campaign in the mid-1970s. Through the 1970s and 1980s, she appeared in print and television advertisements for brands including Nescafe, Band-Aid, Tata Tea, Clearasil, Charmis Vanishing Cream, Carefree (Johnson & Johnson), Cadbury's Nut Mate, Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea, Pond's shampoo, Halo Shampoo, and Campa Cola, among others, becoming a prominent face in Indian print magazines and television advertising. During the Campa Cola campaign, she introduced a young Salman Khan to her then-fiance, Kailash Surendranath, leading to Khan's first appearance as a model.
She also participated in fashion shows and textile campaigns, including for Garden Sarees (Bombay Dyeing) and Modella Suitings' 1981 "Bonded" series. Her editorial work included pictorials in Cine Blitz, a cover feature for Swagat (October 1986), and a Holi-themed cover for Dharamyug (1984), among appearances in several Star & Style issues.
Gupta Surendranath made her acting debut opposite Mithun Chakraborty in Aamne Saamne (1982), playing Rita, and went on to appear in Purana Mandir (1984), a major box-office success that later attained cult status in Indian horror cinema. She played Komal in Apna Jahan (1985), alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval, and continued in the horror genre with lead roles in Saamri (1985), recognised as India's first 3D Hindi horror film, and Tahkhana (1986).
She also played a tribal girl in Mahesh Bhatt's Aashiana (1986), and starred opposite Mohanlal as the female lead in the Malayalam film Jeevante Jeevan (1985), directed by J. Williams. She later appeared in Feroz Khan's Janbaaz (1986), featuring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Dimple Kapadia.
