Agnieszka Holland is a Polish director and screenwriter. The award winning filmmaker has worked in both movies and television, with over 40 credits to her name. In 2020, she was elected to be the President of the European Film Academy. She primarily focuses on political content for her films, with her Holocaust based movies being the most impactful and well remembered. Holland started her career as an assistant director to filmmakers Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Wajda, before making a name for herself. Her first big break came through the drama film Provincial Actors (Aktorzy Prowincjonalni) (1978).
Since then Holland has worked on numerous films which have received international acclaim, with several winning awards at prestigious events like the Berlin International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. Among several awards and accolades, Angry Harvest (1985) and In Darkness (2011) both received Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, while the 1990 film Europa Europa was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and also won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. More recent credits include three episodes from the popular series House of Cards (2015 - 2017), and the feature films Spoor (2017) and
Mr. Jones (2019).
