Akshay Mhatre started his acting career on television, with the ETV Marathi show Sawar Re, which was a remake of the popular Hindi series Naa Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha. The success of the series paved way for Akshay`s feature film debut, which came in the 2016 movie Youth. Subsequently, the actor landed the lead role in the Hindi soap opera Piyaa Albela, which aired on Zee TV and was well-received by the audience. Other significant acting credits include the Marathi films Aart (2016) and Looose Control (2018).
