The man behind one of Malayalam cinema`s highest-grossing movies, the 2015 romantic film Premam, Alphonse Puthren is a writer, director, and editor. Hailing from Aluva, Kochi, Alphonse studied at various schools such as Mount Tabor School Kalamassery, Lena School Lovedale, Lawrence School Lovedale, Rajagiri Public School, Kalamassery, and St. Aloysius High School Paravur, before finally completing his schooling from Amrita Vidyalayam. He went on to attain a BCA degree from MES College, however, after a switch in interest, he moved to Chennai where he studied filmmaking, graduating with a Diploma in Filmmaking from S. A. E. College, Chennai.
Upon completing his diploma course, he went on to direct a number of short films and music videos. Even during his initial days in the industry, Alphonse got the opportunity to work with stars like Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim, and Rajeev Pillai in his short films. He then made his big screen debut, directing the bilingual movie Neram, starring Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim, and Bobby Simha in lead roles. Not only did he direct the movie, but he also wrote its screenplay and edited it.
His next project, Premam, went on to become a blockbuster hit with it receiving immense critical acclaim and accolades. Becoming one of Malayalam cinema`s highest-grossing movies of all time, Premam also was the first Malayalam movie to have a 259-day run in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. In 2016, one of the director and writer`s short films, Eli, starring Nivin Pauly, was included in the five-part anthology film Aviyal, produced by Karthik Subbaraj under his banner Stone Bench Creations.
In 2018, Alphonse turned producer with the Siju Wilson, Sharafudheen, and Krishna Sankar-starrer Malayalam comedy Thobama.
