Engaged in filmmaking since an early age, Dunn worked as an editor in BBC and continued to shoot personal projects. His first film credit was the1981 film Andrina on BBC. The cinematographer has won British Academy of Film and Television Arts TV Award - Best Film Cameraman for films Threads (1984), Edge of Darkness (1985) and Tumbledown (1988).

Having displayed a wide range of cinematic styles and technique, Dunn has also worked as Director of Photography on a wide variety of films, including Blame L.A. Story (1991), It on the Bellboy (1992), The Bodyguard (1992), The Hawk (1993), Is There Life Out There?
