About
Award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter Anjali Menon is one of the most exciting and original voices to emerge during what is popularly known as the new wave of Malayalam cinema. An alumnus of the London Film School, she made her feature film debut with the family drama Manjadikuru (2008), which bagged the Grand Jury Prize at the South Asian International Film Festival, the FIPRESCI Prize for Best Malayalam Film at the 13th International Film Festival of Kerala and was feted at several other Film Festivals around the world. The moviegoers of Kerala first took note of Anjali`s prowess as a writer-director thanks to the anthology movie Kerala Cafe (2009), where she directed a segment titled Happy Journey. Anwar Rasheed`s coming-of-age drama Ustad Hotel (2012) was Anjali`s next in Mollywood, where she served as a screenwriter. The Dulquer Salmaan starrer was set against the backdrop of a much-beloved restaurant in coastal Calicut, and chronicled the story of a unique bond between a spirited youngster and his sagacious grandfather. Ustad Hotel went on to become a blockbuster, and Anjali won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay for her work in the movie. In 2014, the writer-director helmed the coming-of-age romantic drama Bangalore Days, which featured an ensemble cast that included Nivin Pauly, Dulquer Salmaan, Nazriya Nazim, Fahadh Faasil, Parvathy and Isha Talwar. The film opened to highly positive reviews, besides going on to become the highest grossing movie of the year and one of the highest grossing Malayalam films of all time. It has since been remade into Tamil as Bangalore Naatkal (2016). After a four-year hiatus, Anjali returned to filmmaking with Koode (2018), a family drama which starred Prithviraj Sukumaran, Nazriya Nazim and Parvathy in the lead roles.
