A versatile artist, Anthony McCarten is a playwright, novelist, and filmmaker from New Zealand who is best known for writing and producing the highly critically acclaimed film The Theory of Everything, which earned him an Academy nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

After completing his studies, McCarten started his career by working as a reporter with The Taranaki Herald in New Zealand for a couple of years, before eventually starting a career in the film industry. A double Academy award nominee, made his debut as a writer with the short film titled Nocturne in a Room (1992), before eventually getting wide attention and fame with The Theory of Everything in 2014. His other notable film credit includes Darkest Hour (2018), a British war drama directed by Joe Wright.
