Syed Asghar Wajahat, born on 5 July 1946 in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, is a Hindi scholar, novelist, playwright, documentary filmmaker, and television scriptwriter. He holds a PhD from Aligarh Muslim University and joined Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, as a lecturer of Hindi in 1971, later rising to Professor and Head of the Department of Hindi. Over his career, he has published around 20 books, including five novels, six full-length plays, five collections of short stories, a travelogue, a collection of street plays, and a work of literary criticism, with his writing translated into numerous Indian and foreign languages. He was ranked among the top ten Hindi writers in a 2007 Outlook (Hindi) magazine survey.

He is best known for his acclaimed 1989 play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, centered on an elderly Hindu woman who stays behind in her Lahore haveli after Partition, refusing to leave even as a Muslim refugee family from Lucknow is allotted the house. First staged by Naya Theatre under Habib Tanvir's direction, the play went on to be performed across Lahore, Karachi, New York, Dubai, and throughout India, later also produced by Ank Theatre under Dinesh Thakur. It forms the literary foundation for Batwara 1947 (2026), for which Wajahat also contributed to the screenplay and dialogues alongside director Rajkumar Santoshi.
