Ashok Rane has been actively involved in the film world since the last 40 years in multiple avatars viz. as a film society movement activist, critic, scholar, academician, member of the international jury, writer, and director. He has written several books and has multiple documentaries, TV serials and feature films to his credit. He is the first film critic in Marathi Cinema to turn filmmaker. He has done extensive research on French New Wave cinema in Cinematheque Francaise, Paris. He has been invited by prestigious international film festivals from around the globe as a film critic, special guest, and member of the jury. He is the recipient of 2 National Awards, 2 International Awards, and the Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad award for his book on unique people he met world over.
