She first rose to prominence courtesy of her performance in the Irish crime drama television series Love/Hate, which earned her an Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2015. Besides these, she has also appeared in popular television shows like The Village, The Last Kingdom, Happy Valley and Peaky Blinders. In 2013, Murphy made her feature film debut with the critically acclaimed Judi Dench starrer Philomena. Other notable film credits include 71 (2014), Northmen - A Viking Saga (2014) and the 2017 action thriller The Foreigner, which starred Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan in the lead roles.
