Denis Villeneuve is a French-Canadian film director and writer who was born in Gentilly, Quebec, Canada. Villeneuve started his career as a winner of the Radio-Canada`s Youth Film competition in 1990-91. He has studied films at a french university. Villeneuve`s movies like Cosmos (1996) and Un 32 aot sur terre (1998) were presented at the Cannes Film Festival. His movies, Maelstrom (2001), Polytechnique (2010) and Incendies (2011) bagged him a Genie Award for Best Director, also all three films won the Best Picture award. It was the 2013 movie, Prisoners that brought Villeneuve international fame. The movie starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2014. He is known to frequently work with legendary cinematographer, Roger Deakins. Villeneuve`s other movies include Enemy (2013), Sicario (2015) and Arrival (2016). Arrival received eight nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, winning one award for Best Sound Editing. In 2017 Villeneuve directed Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott`s sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner (1982). The movie has Ryan Gosling in the lead and Harrison Ford reprising his role of Rick Deckard from the 1982 movie. He then directed in Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). The films were a new adaptation of the 1965 novel for Legendary Pictures with Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts writing the screenplay.
