About
The rise of hip-hop in India has coincided with the emergence and rise of Vivian Fernandes popularly known by his stage name Divine, who is considered as one of the most popular rappers and hip-hop artists in India. With awards and accolades to his name, Divine`s fiery, anger-spitting verses have struck a chord with everyone from Dharavi to the world. With hit singles like Meri Gully Mein, Jungli Sher and Kaam 25, Divine`s brutally honest Hindi rap draws inspiration from his own life and the streets of Mumbai, set to beats that wouldn`t be out of place in a Los Angeles Studio.
Divine`s story and the rise of the Indian hip-hop inspired Zoya Akhtar to make a film based on the lives of two friends from the gully gang, Divine and Naezy. The film saw Ranveer Singh play the lead role and Alia Bhatt who did not miss out on giving us a performance to be remembered. Gully Boy also sees Divine in action on five tracks, including co-writing a song, Doori, with the legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar. He has also composed music for films like Mukkabaaz (2018), Blackmail (2018) and Judgemental Hai Kya (2019).
In addition to being one of the music industry`s most bankable stars, Divine has also added entrepreneur to his bag of feats. He recently launched Gully Gang Entertainment, a multi-purpose entity that will serve as a record label, Gully Gang Records, unearth and manage new and exciting hip-hop talent, creating live music IPs in addition to other things.
