Dame Emma Thomas, Lady Nolan, DBE, was born on 9 December 1971 in London. She studied ancient history at University College London, where she met Christopher Nolan in 1989 on their first day moving into halls of residence; he later introduced her to the university's film society, sparking her interest in filmmaking.

Thomas has produced every one of Nolan's feature films since his 1998 debut Following, including Memento, The Prestige, the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer - a body of work that has been acclaimed worldwide. In 2001, she co-founded the production company Syncopy with Nolan, through which they continue to develop their films. For Oppenheimer (2023), she won the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Picture, becoming the first British woman to win the Best Picture Oscar. She received a damehood in 2024 for her contributions to film, and produces The Odyssey (2026), Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's poem starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya.
