National Film Award-winner, Gajendra Ahire is one of the most noted filmmakers of Marathi cinema. The director and writer, who has also contributed to the Hindi film industry, began his career at the age of 23. He made his stage debut with the play Aaicha Ghar Unhacha, which also saw him act. Subsequently, Ahire wrote plays such as Unch Maza Jhoka Ga and Janmasiddha. He later began working in the Hindi and Marathi TV industry and went on writer more than 2000 episodes for several TV shows. The popular TV shows of the `90s Shrimaan Srimati is one of his most prominent works in the TV industry.

Ahire made his directorial debut with the movie Not Only Mrs. Raut which won the Best Feature Film in Marathi at 51st National FIlm Awards. He has since then won several national and International accolades for directing movies such as Shevri (2007, National Award for Best Marathi Feature Film), Anumati (2013, Best Feature Film - New York Indian Film Festival), and Postcard (2015, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film).

In 2015, he directed the movie The Silence featuring Anjali Patil, Nagraj Manjule, Kadambari Kadam, Raghubir Yadav, and Mugdha Chaphekar. Based on a true story of a sexual assault and child abuse, the movie was screened at several international and national film festivals and received unanimous positive acclaim. Ahire won the Director`s Vision Award at the 2015 Stuttgart Indian Film Festival. The movie received a theatrical release in India in October 2017.

In 2018, he directed Marathi drama Pimpal, starring Priya Bapat and Kishore Kadam in lead roles. His 2019 release includes Kulkarni Chowkatala Desphande, directed by Gajendra Ahire.
