One of the ace filmmakers in India, Jyoti Prakash Dutta, and better known as J.P. Dutta is noted for making mostly patriotic war films with an ensemble cast. The veteran filmmaker made his directorial debut with Ghulami in 1985 and subsequently directed films like Yateem (1988), Batwara (1989), Hathyar (1989), and Kshatriya (1993), before eventually gaining wide fame and popularity for making the super hit war film based on the Indo-Pak war, Border (1997). The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration.

Post the huge success of Border, he continued making war films like LOC Kargil (2003), which had an ensemble cast. His other notable film credits include Umrao Jaan (2006). Apart from making films, J.P. Dutta also was one of the jury members for the National Film Awards in 2010. His 2018 release includes Paltan.
