Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh is India's torchbearer of Saraswati Veena, the national musical instrument of India. An artist, collaborator, composer, researcher, creator, pioneer, and educator Jayanthi is a sixth generation musician, who began playing the Veena at the age of three. She is one of the youngest Veena artistes to receive the A-Top grading from All India Radio.
Her mother Smt. Lalgudi Rajalakshmi first introduced her to music and later she was trained by her maternal aunt and guru, Smt. Padmavathy Ananthagopalan, and Dr. S. Balachander. She also holds a Doctorate for her work on Styles and playing techniques of the Saraswati Veena.
Apart from participating in several prestigious festivals in India and abroad, Jayanthi has performed with Tabla Ustad Zakir Hussain, Violin Maestro Shri R. Kumaresh and with the British Philharmonic at Royal Festival Hall, London. She has composed music for many musicals and dance productions.
Dr. Jayanthi has recorded with several prestigious labels such as Times Music, Music Today, and Sa re ga ma. She has received many awards including the Sangeetha Choodamani, Kalaimamani, Veena Naada Mani and Kala Ratna. She is a seven-time recipient of The Music Academy, Chennais Award for Veena.
