After working as a social media manager at Sony Television and as a publicity coordinator at Paramount Pictures, Justin Simien wrote, directed and edited three short films. He got his big break with the drama Dear White People that premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. He then turned writer, director, and songwriter for the 2020 horror-comedy Bad Hair. The film had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
