The chairman of the Kerala State Film Academy, Kamaluddin Mohammed Majeed, better known by his professional name, Kamal is a versatile artist who primarily works in Malayalam cinema. He is a writer, director, and producer. Having started his career as an associate director to Lenin Rajendran in his 1982 movie, Chillu, Kamal got his big break in 1983 when director P.N. Menon roped him as the writer for Kadamba.
Following his maiden venture as a writer, Kamal subsequently concentrated on writing dialogues and story for his own directorial ventures. His first feature film as a director was Mizhineerppoovukal (1986) and over the years, in his illustrious career, he directed more than 30 films. Some of his most notable film credits include Orkkapurathu (1988), Thooval Saprsam (1990), Azhakiya Ravanan (1996), Madhuranombarakkattu (2000), Rappakal (2005), Gaddama (2011), Nadan (2013), and Aami (2018), a Malayalam biography drama starring Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Anoop Menon, and Murali Gopy.
