Early Life and Education:
Chithra was born into a musically inclined family. Her father, Krishnan Nair, was a teacher and a musician who recognized and nurtured her talent from a young age. She underwent formal training in Carnatic music under Dr. K. Omanakutty and later earned a scholarship from the Government of India to pursue advanced studies in music.

Career Highlights:
Chithra made her playback singing debut in 1979 with the Malayalam film Attahasam, composed by M. G. Radhakrishnan. Her rise to recognition came with the song "Manjal Prasadavum" from the Malayalam film Nakhakshathangal (1986), composed by Jerry Amaldev. She achieved further fame in Tamil cinema through her collaborations with Ilaiyaraaja, especially with songs like "Chinna Kuyil Paadum Paattu" and "Kannalane." Over the years, she has worked with several renowned music directors, including A. R. Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, and M. M. Keeravani, and has lent her voice to songs across multiple Indian film industries. Chithra is also set to make her debut in Marathi cinema with the film Majhi Prarthana, where she has recorded songs in Marathi for the first time.

Awards and Honors:
Chithra has received numerous awards throughout her career, including six National Film Awards, the highest number received by any female playback singer in India. She has also won eight Filmfare Awards South and thirty-six Kerala State Film Awards, along with several other accolades from the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. She was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2005 and the Padma Bhushan in 2021. Additionally, she received the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Legacy and Contributions:
Renowned for her adaptability across musical styles, Chithra has recorded over 25,000 songs spanning classical, devotional, and contemporary genres. She is deeply involved in philanthropic work through the K. S. Chithra Foundation, which supports underprivileged musicians. Her continued global performances and contributions to Indian music have solidified her legacy as one of the most iconic playback singers in the country.
