M. S. Bhaskar

Muthupandi Sundaram Bhaskar is a Tamil film, television, and theater artist who has worked in more than 75 films in the Tamil film industry. The actor who mainly works in a supporting roles has also appeared as a comedian in various Tamil TV series. Apart from acting, Bhaskar has worked as a dubbing artist and occasionally as a playback singer.

Early Life
Born on January 19th, 1952 in Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, India to Somu Thevar and Sathyabama, M.S. Bhasar attended Goplalapuram Boys Higher Secondary School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He later graduated in from Pachaiyappa`s College, Chennai. He has three siblings, one brother and two sisters. His elder sister Hemamalini is a renowned dubbing artist in the south film industry and has dubbed for all the top actresses in various films.

Bhaskar was a part of a Tamil drama troupe "society for new drama", performing modern theatrical plays all over Tamil Nadu. Before, Bhaskar began his stint in the television industry, he worked as an LIC agent to supplement his income. He also worked in Tamil Nadu Mercantile bank for a brief period. Soon after, he started working as a dubbing artist, where he dubbed Telugu films in Tamil. Post the dissolution of his drama society he moved to television, acting as a comedian.

Personal Life
M S Bhaskar is married and has two children, a son named Aadithya and a daughter named and Ishwarya.

Movie Career
Being an ardent fan of Sivaji Ganesan and Kamal Haasan, Bhaskar Made his debut in the Tamil film industry with Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi in the year 1987, where he played a small character, which went unnoticed. From 1987 to 2002, the actor appeared in various films like Makkal En Pakkam (1987) Salem Vihnu (1990) and mostly small roles. Post 1990, the actor took a 11 year sabbatical and only returned to mainstream cinema in 2001 when he bagged a role in Kottai Maariymmam (2001). In 2002, he was seen in a Tamil political drama film Thamizhan, produced by G.Venkateswaran and starring Vijay and debutante Priyanka Chopra.

Creating a mark for himself in the film industry with his wits and supreme comic timing, he moved over to supporting characters in big budget films like Sivaji: The Boss, Sadhu Miranda, Dum Dum Dum, Dasavathaaram, Santosh Subramaniam and Mozhi, which was directed by Radha Mohan and produced by Prakash Raj, the Tamil comedy drama was a critical and commercial success at the box office. Essaying the role of a professor in the film, Bhaskar won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Character Artist (Male). While choosing roles for his films, he prefers the character`s significance more than the duration of the role in the film. This quality won him a lot of appreciation in the film Vindhai, where his character was onscreen for a small duration of 15 minutes yet it was a substantial role in the context of the movie.

Bhaskar shared the silver screen with superstar Rajnikanth in the Tamil film, Sivaji: The Boss, as Pazhanisam. Following this he also appeared in films like Vellithirai, Sutta Pazham, Manjal Veyil , Thambikku Indha Ooru, Oththa Veedu and Sutta Kadhai. His 2017 releases include Vaigai Express, a Tamil-language thriller Vaigai Express directed by Shaji Kailas.

Television Career
After his stint with the theatre group ended, Bhaskar started acting in TV series. His first break in television came with Nam Kudumbam and Vizhuthugal. He then appeared in Ganga Yamuna Saraswati, a Tamil soap opera that aired on Raj TV. Various other serials like Alaigal, senior junior, Arasi, Vizhudugal and Selvi, gained him popularity among the television audience. Although he was a renowned face on television the breakthrough in his career came with comedy serial Chinna Papa Periya Papa, which won him a lot of praises. Another popular serial which gave him recognition was Selvi.

Bhaskar started his acting career by performing with a Tamil drama troupe- society for new drama. Bhaskar was well appreciated for his performance as "accountant Bhaskar" in one of the plays. After a successful run, the theatre society dissolved and Bhaskar continued with his passion for acting with other troupes such as Nungambakkam Boys Kondatum. His 2017 ventures include Vaigai Express, a Tamil-language thriller Vaigai Express directed by Shaji Kailas and the dark comedy Peechaankai directed by Ashok. His 2018 project includes NOTA. His other releases include Naadodigal 2 (2020), Oh My Kadavule (2020) and Malaysia To Amnesia (2021).

  • While Bhaskar was young, he used to tag along with her elder sister Hemamalini, a prominent dubbing artist in south film industry. Seeing her work, Bhaskar got interested in dubbing and started working as a dubbing artist in the year 1986.
