Hailing from Jharkhand and having studied at Ramjas College, Delhi University, Raj Kumar Gupta is an Indian film writer and director. His first associated with the Hindi film industry came in 2004 when he became a part of Anurag Kashyap`s crime drama Black Friday as an associate director. However, owing to its sensitive and rather controversial topic, the Indian Censor Board did not allow its release for three years and the movie finally released in 2007.
Reuniting with Anurag Kashyap, Raj was the associate director of the mystery drama fantasy No Smoking in 2007. The next year, in 2008, he debuted as a writer and director with the critically acclaimed psychological crime thriller Aamir, which revolved around a day in the life of a young Muslim man who finds himself at the mercy of Islamic extremists wanting to carry out a bombing in the city. The movie was very well-received and was praised by the audience and critics alike.
Next, he directed the biographical thriller No One Killed Jessica in 2011, which was based on the Jessica Lal murder case. The movie opened to positive reviews and went on to garner widespread praise, winning four Filmfare Award nominations at the 57th Filmfare Awards. Among his other ventures is the heist black comedy Ghanchakkar, starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, which released in 2013, and the 2018 drama thriller Raid, featuring Ajay Devgn and Ileana D`cruz. His 2019 release includes India`s Most Wanted, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta.
