A Visionary Director, Master of Thrill!
Rajiv Rai is a celebrated Indian Filmmaker renowned for revolutionising the action-thriller genre in Bollywood. The son of legendary producer Gulshan Rai, he was born in Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, on 18th July 1955. In 1962, his father enrolled him in Welham Prep School, Dehradun. In 1967, he was transferred to the prestigious Doon School, where he graduated in December 1972. From the year 1973 to 1976, he attended St. Xavier`s College, Mumbai, and graduated with a B.Com degree.
In January of 1977, Rajiv Rai`s creative journey began by assisting the most renowned film director, Yash Chopra, under whom he worked on three projects: Trishul (May 1978), Noorie (May 1979) & Kaala Patthar (August 1979).
Soon after, he came on his own under the guidance of his Financier -Distributor - Producer father, Gulshan Rai, as a Screenplay Writer and Director. He burst onto the scene with Yudh (1985) followed by the iconic blockbuster Tridev (1989), instantly establishing himself as a director with a bold cinematic voice.
With back-to-back hits like Vishwatma (1992), Mohra (1994), and the cult classic Gupt (1997), Rai created a signature style defined by gripping narratives, stylish visuals, and electrifying music. His collaborations with music composer Viju Shah and lyricist Anand Bakshi produced some of the most memorable soundtracks of the era.
Known for his larger-than-life storytelling, sleek action sequences, and unforgettable characters, Rajiv Rai`s films became cultural landmarks. Despite stepping away from the limelight due to personal and family constraints in the late `90s, his influence on Indian Cinema remains indelible.
Today, his legacy continues to inspire a new generation of filmmakers and audiences who grew up on the thrill, emotion, and cinematic flair only a Rajiv Rai film could deliver!
