Playwright, television, film and theatre artiste playing lead roles, S. Ve Shekher, is a household name with Tamil connoisseurs, popularly known for his punch, quick wit and humor. He has a hold over the realm of performing arts since 1974, a feat which is quite commendable.
Sattanathapuram Venkataraman Shekher known as S.Ve Shekher, is a diploma holder in mechanical engineering with post diploma in air-conditioning and refrigeration. He is also a sound recordist, programe producer, still photographer, vidiographer editor and director. He is an expert in broadcasting, sound effects and theatrics. He won the best All India programme producer award for four years in row from radio and tv advertising practitioners association of India ltd.
Encouraged by the success of a Singapore drama tour in 1974, he founded his own drama troupe Natakharpiya which has so far produced 24 stage plays and performed more than 5900 shows. On an invitation from Tamil community of USA, Canada, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangkok, he had staged full length dramas in these countries successfully. In USA, he created history in staging full length dramas with his own troupe (28 shows in 32 days) apart from performing his mega hit play Periya Thambe with the local talents at Washington and New Jersey. Staging eight full length plays at one go from 07.47 AM to 10.49 AM on the following day in April 1985, is acknowledged as an unsurpassed feat of a stage artiste in the Limca book of records. Pleased with his service to the Tamil stage and at his request, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J Jayalaltiha extended 50% tariff concessions for travel in Govt. Transport Corporation buses to drama troupes.
He was the editor for a Tamil magazine Naradhar. S. Ve Shekher`s tele-serial Vannakolangal is first ever serial in Tamil television history was re-telecast eight times. He has produced other successful tele-serials such as Namkudumbam, Taxi Taxi, Sirippu Mazhai some of the episodes in these serials highlights eye donation, blood donation and juvenile diabetes. He also produced a short film for rain water harvesting. He was the president of Tamil Nadu television artiste union for 10 years.
With his technical proviso along with histrionics he produced an unique television show, a real treat S.Ve Shekher meets S. Ve Shekher wherein he is both the interviewer and interviewee. This also founds a place in the Limca book of records.
Shekher made his debut in celluloid in 1980 with K. Balachander`s Varumayin Niram Sigappu and since then has acted nearly 90 films. He was the regional chair-person of central board of film censors (2003-04).
Apart from theatre, S. Ve Shekher is also connected with so many social welfare activites. Dhekher is a regular blood donor, having donated more than 50 times and willing fund raiser for a number of campaigns through jaycees, lions clubs, rotary clubs, many educational and social institutions. He himself associated with the NIIT in their each one teach one computer literacy programme. He has raised funds for Adyar Cancer Institute through many programmes. He is the brand ambassador for Asha a house for mentally ill. Through his drama Thathupillai Shekher could collect INR Two lakhs and donated the same to the neurology department to buy a respirator unit and a computer to the anaesthesia department in Government general hospital, Chennai.
Air cargo club of madras had collected INR 12,34,567.89 for the kargil war fund through his play Alwhaa. He had also collected and donated to the chief minister`s fund for tsunami fund (INR 1.5 lakh) and for INR 1 lakh for flood relief fund (2005) through his dramas. He is helping poor students, cancer patients, physically challenged, old-age homes, orphanages, diabetes care, free eye camps, caring for HIV patients, heart and operations and serve dead (collecting unclaimed dead bodies from Govt. hospitals and mass burial). All these noble causes are being done by him through his trust Sri Sukar public charitable trust. He has built Sannidhanams to Sri Sukha Bramha maharishi at Chennai (Madhya Kailash), Maduraiand Salem (Sugavaneswarer temple).
