Saikat Mitra began his musical journey in the early 1980s, initially performing songs made famous by his father, Shyamal Mitra. Starting around 1983, his talent impressed legends like Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, Hemanta Mukherjee, and Suprava Sarkar.
He made his playback debut in 1984 with the Bengali film Kenaram Becharam, singing compositions by his father. Through the late 1980s and early '90s, he worked with leading composers such as Salil Chowdhury, Bhupen Hazarika, and others, and also lent his voice to the Hindi TV serial Charitraheen.
In 1994, he co-founded the record label Gold Disc, contributing to popular Bengali modern and tribute albums like Hemanta Shraddhanjali and Shyamal Shraddhanjali. He continues to compose and perform for Bengali films and modern music.
