Sajin Babu is a national award-winning writer-director from Kerala, India. He is best known for his internationally acclaimed film `Biriyaani - Flavours of the Flesh` which won the NETPAC Award for Best Film at ASIATICA, Rome, Italy and won him the Special Mention Award for Direction at the Indian National Film Awards. He is the recipient of several international and national awards for his bold story telling and vision.
Early Life
Sajin Baabu was born in a remote village in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. With no real exposure to filmmaking, his tryst with cinema began when as a young law student he was inspired by the International Film Festival of Kerala and was drawn into the field. A self-taught filmmaker, he started off by making campus films followed by docu-fiction, documentary and short films.
Movie Career
His debut feature film titled " Asthmayam Vare" (Unto the Dusk) made in 2014 premiered in MAMI (Mumbai International film festival). It won him numerous accolades including the Silver Pheasant (Rajata Chakoram), Jury Award for Best Film and the Certificate of Merit to Promote at National & International Market at the 19th International Film festival of Kerala 2014, Chithra Bharathi Award for the Best Indian Film at the Bangalore International Film Festival 2014 etc. The film was screened at various film festivals across the country. He was also presented the Kerala Film Critics Award for the Best Debut Director for this film.
His second feature "Ayaal Sassi" (Man with a coffin) has the popular actor Sreenivasan as the lead role and was hailed for his quirky plot and making.
His next movie was titled "Biriyaani- Flavours of flesh" and starred Kani Kusruti in the lead role. The movie made a splash at the International Film Festival Circuit where it won several awards including NETPAC award for Best film at Asiatica, Rome, Italy, Jury Prize for Best Film at Bangalore International Film Festival, Jury Award at IFFLA, Indian Film Festival, Los Angeles. It was the Official Selection at the Moscow International Film Festival, one of the oldest Film Festivals in the world and several other festivals such as Tiburon International Film Festival, California, USA, Toulouse Indian Film Festival, France, Caleidoscope Indian International Film Festival, Boston, Imagine India Film Festival, Spain, Nepal International Film Festival, Melbourne Indian Film Festival, Indo German Film Week, Berli, Yellowstone International film festival, International Film Festival of Kerala, among others. The film brought its lead actress, Kani Kusruti, the BRICS Award for the Best Actress at the Moscow IFF, Best Actress Award at the Kerala State Awards, Filmfare India South, and several others. Sajin Baabu received 67th Indian National Film Award - Special Mention for Direction of this movie. It also won the Kerala Film Critics Award and Padmarajan Puraskarama for the Best Screenplay.
He has served as the Jury Member at the 69th Indian National Film Awards, International Film Festival of Kerala - 2021 & 2023, 67th IFFI - Indian Panorama, Bangalore International Film Festival 2021 etc.
