Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Shamba in 1980, Samaresh Basu was one of Bengali literature's most eminent writers who wrote his first novel titled Nayanpurer Mati at the age of 21. The prolific writer wrote under the pseudonyms Kalkut and Bhramar, and has over 200 short stories and 100 novels to his credit.

Catering to almost every age group, Basu is best remembered for creating a fictitious character Gogol Omnibus, a detective. Most of his novels chronicled the life and cases of Gogol such as Garadheen Jaanalay Rakkhos, Gogol Kothay?, Gogoler Royraja Uddhar, Kairong Moth Er Gogoler Kando, and Ratna Rahasya O Gogol among many others.

A lot of his literary works were adapted into movies some of which are Nirjan Saikate (1963), Shaukeen (1982), Genesis (1986), Uttara (2000), Nater Guru (2003), Bibar (2006), Goyenda Gogol (2013), Gogoler Kirti (2014), and Honeymoon (2018).
