One of the most prominent choreographers in Bollywood, Saroj Khan started off as a background dancer in late 1950s and has choreographed more than 2000 songs. She learnt dance and also worked under film choreographer B. Sohanlal, before making her debut as an independent choreographer with the 1974 movie Geeta Mera Naam. She rose to prominence for her work with Sri Devi for the song Hawa Hawai in Mr India (1987), followed by her work with Madhuri Dixit in hit songs like Ek Do Teen in Tezaab (1988), Tamma Tamma Loge in Thanedaar (1990) and Dhak Dhak Karne Laga in Beta (1992).

She won the National Film Award for Best Choreography for Jab We Met, and also for the song Dola Re Dola from Devdas. She has also won Filmfare Best Choreography Award for films like Guru, Devdas, Khalnayak, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Chaalbaaz and Tezaab. Apart from choreography, she has also worked as a writer for movies like Hum Hain Bemisaal (1994), Dil Tera Diwana (1996), Judge Mujrim (1997), Benaam (1999), and Khanjar (2003). Her 2017 venture as a choreographer includes Babuji Ek Ticket Bambai, directed by Arvind Tripathi. Saroj Khan passed away on July 3 2020.
